Excerpt from The Devotions of Bishop Andrewes
Was made from the Edition of 1675 that it had already appeared in a publication of the day and that it was then reprinted in compliance with the suggestion of many persons who wished to possess it simply as a devotional work, apart from its controversial bearings. This very brief preface, dated on the Feast of All Saints, is signed with the well~known initials J. H. N. It speaks well for our own day, that now, after half a century, a new edition of this celebrated book is about to issue from the New York press; and there are many who will welcome its appearance with thankful hearts. This is by no means the first Americanreprint that another should now be called for is a proof of the power of the book, and the vitality of simple and sincere devotion among us.
